Marin hasn’t spoken to anyone from her old life since the day she left everything behind. No one knows the truth about those final weeks. Not even her best friend, Mabel. But even far away from the California coast, at college in New York, Marin still feels the pull of the life and tragedy she’s tried to outrun. Now, months later, alone in an emptied dorm for winter break, Marin waits. Mabel is coming to visit and Marin will be forced to face everything that’s been left unsaid and finally confront the loneliness that has made a home in her heart.

An intimate whisper that packs an indelible punchWe Are Okay is Nina LaCour at her finest. This gorgeously crafted and achingly honest portrayal of grief will leave you urgent to reach across any distance to reconnect with the people you love.

We Are Okay is a beautiful piece of fiction that needs to be read by everyone. It’s been two years since the book made its debut and made its first impact.   Now two years later, it’s being released here in Australia, allowing a new set of readers to discover this magical book. It’s a book of heartaches, but amongst those heartaches is a beautiful story of first times and much more.

In the cold wintery days of New York, Marin Delaney tries to forget everything since that day. Whilst everyone around life goes on as they prepare for the holidays and heading home. Marin is staying put at college , remaining under the radar wanting to put distance between San Francisco and her.  It’s painted as a doom and gloom situation, however there something that tugs at your heart. What made a young woman turn her back anything.

However there is one shining light or but, it’s up to the readers to decide how Mabel fits into the picture. The dutiful best friend who wants to confront and deal with the sorrow that has driven them apart.

Barely into the story and already with questions arising every chapter, LaCour doesn’t hold back with this story.  It’s a strange moving story, whilst the grief is recognisable over the loss of a love one , her beloved grandfather. It’s left many questions as readers met Marin in present time. She narrates the story as we move between past and present without a reason. The story actually  forms around the events of senior year which is a year that seems was many first. The narration is clear and linear with two times line but the overall story isn’t not.

What clear is that Mabel and grandfather meant the world to her yet there something raw about their relationships you can’t describe. Mabel is open yet her story is only revealed in pieces only revealed when Marin is ready.  Her grandfather on the other hand  was her world and as readers discover was the perfect role model for someone who already experience more than her fair share of death.

Yet as they got older , the lines are draw and constantly left wondering why  Marin has been isolated even before this story begin. Her grandfather seems wrapped up in his mysterious love. Whilst Mabel is becoming  more important to her then she ever realised.

It’s impact soft and steady. The way LaCour goes between the past and present seemingly, brings the heartache and sorrow together. Allowing for the sorrow to overwhelm the reader and let the innocent  events take   place and shape the story.

Quirky and beautiful, We Are Okay is a coming home story about finding your place and learning to accept the way you are. Beautiful written LaCour’s latest Australian release is one that memorable for all the right reasons and readers will lap this book up.
