Yeah, no thanks. Dorthea is completely princed out. Sure being the crown princess of Emerald has its perks—like Glenda Original ball gowns and Hans Christian Louboutin heels. But a forced marriage to the brooding prince Kato is so not what Dorthea had in mind for her enchanted future.

Talk about unhappily ever after.

Trying to fix her prince problem by wishing on a (cursed) star royally backfires, leaving the kingdom in chaos and her parents stuck in some place called “Kansas.” Now it’s up to Dorthea and her pixed off prince to find the mysterious Wizard of Oz and undo the curse…before it releases the wickedest witch of all and spells The End for the world of Story.

With fairy tale retellings being in the rage for a  while.  A book needs to stand out to readers  and Spelled did  just that for me.  It is a quirky different type of story. It not necessary a re-telling more a mash up of the classic fairy tales with The Wizard Of Oz and a good dose of pop culture thrown in to make things quirky perfect .   The result is  intriguing and I love the concept Schow has for the first in her Spelled series

With things changed up , it obvious that our heroine is  Dorthea is a homage to a certain character. However she isn’t like her counterpart. This girl is true fictional spoilt  princess. She has everything she wants as the Princess of Emerald . But  she isn’t happy still. Especially with her prince problem, she rather have nothing to do with.

Until everything she knows is taken away from her and this were the imagination of Schow really gets flowing.  Dothera is forced to step up the plate and set things right  and prove she isn’t like the typical spoilt princess. But this princess isn’t exactly please . As a simple spell  that changed her life , didn’t only  affect her.

So Dorthera has to become a force to reckon with if this teenager is going to get  her problems sorted. But when you have  spent all your time in a castle with the only constant companion gone. She going to be a fish out of water. As much she was spoilt, it was hard not to sympathise with her. She didn’t asked to be like this but she could have taken charge.

As  it was left to  Rexi a servant who had more common sense and skills put to together to drag Doretha on her merry way  along with Kato the prince she rather have nothing to do with .  To solve all the problems armed with basically nothing and it isn’t pretty.  As there a little homage to a few fairy tales and somehow they all get tangled up into Doretha’s story.

Doretha may lead the charge but this story  is equal Kato’s as well. I loved that he was willing to see past and saw what she would be come considering things. Despite knowing the general gist of this novel form the blurb. The author did surprise me a number of times with the narrative story and the illusion the author creates  to give an answer for all actions and drama.

Spelled is a fun book with a good dose of action and puns on top of everything else. Whilst typical in some aspects fairy tale like with the characters not being too developed . There was plenty of action with this story as we watch Doretha and her rag team   try to make sense and deal with the problems in front of them. This adventure does has it ending and whilst  it  sweet ,  I wished it had a little oomph more considering the creativity  this story but I loved the creative and the idea of this story .
